Uncharted PC port crashing: causes & fixes
The crashes players actually hit, what caused them and which release fixed them, for both the BilalReloaded and SuperMedo ports.
- Device lost
- Black screen
- No sound
- AVX / AVX2
Crash reports for both ports, matched with the release that fixed them. Facts come from the release notes and READMEs of bc160201983/Uncharted-The-Nathan-Drake-Collection-PC-port and Supermedo/uncharted_pc, checked November 8, 2026. If your problem is listed as fixed, update first.
Never run “fix commands” from GitHub issues. The SuperMedo issue tracker is spammed with posts titled “All Crashes Fix Command” that point to other repositories. SuperMedo: “Never paste ‘fix commands’ from GitHub issues, those are malware.” Real fixes ship as new releases of the port.
First steps for any crash
- Update the port. Both launchers offer new versions at start. Many crashes in this table were fixed within days.
- Update the GPU driver (Vulkan 1.3 required) and close overlays you do not need (RivaTuner was fixed in BilalReloaded 0.6.1; OBS Game Capture can grow memory).
- Use update 1.02 of the game. Most of BilalReloaded’s fixes need it.
- Go back to safe settings: 60 FPS limit, Frames queued 1, upscaling off, frame generation off.
- Try the other port. Both read the same game folder; a crash fixed in one is often fixed in the other a few days later.
Known crashes and their fixes
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Uncharted 3, chapter 2: “device lost” when young Sully appears | Shader read past its memory; GeForce/Intel stop where a PS4 returns zero | Fixed in BilalReloaded 0.8.4; SuperMedo 0.3.9 fixed the shirt’s cloth shaders |
| GeForce: “device lost” after a while (Uncharted 1, 2) | 1024-thread skinning shaders under load | Fixed: SuperMedo 0.3.10, BilalReloaded 0.8.3. Still open for some in U2/U3 (#316 #314 #277): report with breadcrumbs |

| Uncharted 2 Path of Light: can’t climb the second blade | Physics at 60+ FPS | Open (#379, #801): set the limit to 60 for that section |
| Game stops on the US version with update 1.02 | Update read as empty when Windows allows symbolic links | Fixed in BilalReloaded 0.6.0 |
| Memory keeps growing while recording with OBS | Each Game Capture hook creates DirectX devices in the game | NVIDIA: Vulkan/OpenGL present method → Prefer native, or use Window Capture |
Black screen or nothing on screen
- Intel HD/UHD graphics: update to SuperMedo 0.3.3 or later; Intel HD 520 and older may still fail inside Intel’s driver.
- Black or missing water in Uncharted 1: fixed in BilalReloaded 0.8.1 (reflections and PS4 colour back).
- Black boxes growing on screen or black guns in Uncharted 3: fixed in SuperMedo 0.3.10.
- Black screen with a 4 GB or smaller card: video memory runs out. SuperMedo asks for 6 GB; BilalReloaded offers Save video memory for 2–4 GB cards.
- GPUs with only Vulkan 1.2 (for example NVIDIA Kepler) are not supported; that was requested in SuperMedo #796.
CPU instructions and “AVX2”
The PS4’s processor supports AVX but not AVX2, so the games use AVX, F16C, BMI1, MOVBE and LZCNT. BilalReloaded’s README still says Intel 4th-gen (Haswell) or any Ryzen, but release 0.8.0 added Intel 2nd- and 3rd-gen Core (for example the i5-3570 or i7-2600) and AMD FX: the port carries out the missing instructions. SuperMedo supports Ivy Bridge since 0.3.7 and AMD FX since 0.3.6, but not Sandy Bridge (no F16C). Windows on ARM (Snapdragon X Elite) crashes in Uncharted 1 at the first level (SuperMedo #799, open).
Low FPS and stutter
- CPU-limited (most PCs at 1080p and 1440p): turn on Multithreaded rendering, keep Idle game threads on Sleep and Frames queued at 1 (BilalReloaded). Upscaling saves GPU time only.
- GPU-limited: lower the resolution or use FSR / DLSS upscaling (Quality 1/1.5, Balanced 1/1.7, Performance 1/2, Ultra Performance 1/3 of width and height).
- Stutter the first time through an area: shader compilation; it fades as the cache fills.
- Uncharted 3 London Underground dropping to 10 FPS: fixed in SuperMedo 0.3.14 for cards with 8 GB or more.
- Linux + RADV: streaming stutter under Proton (#382, open).
Audio problems
- No sound at all: SuperMedo 0.3.14 tries simpler audio modes if the device won’t open; check the Windows default output.
- A sound format the port cannot play (AAC) used to close the game; BilalReloaded 0.8.2 keeps it silent instead.
- Surround: both ports tell the games your real speaker layout (stereo, 5.1, 7.1). Headphones keep the stereo mix.
- Movies slower than the sound at 4K: reported in BilalReloaded 0.5.0 (#77).
Report a crash properly
BilalReloaded: attach boot.log (launcher → Advanced → Open log folder). For “device lost”, create analysis\uncharted-user\test-env.txt with the line GOW3_GPU_BREADCRUMBS=1, play to the crash once more, attach the new boot.log, then delete the file. Freezes: attach hang-*.txt. SuperMedo: attach user\last_run.log and, for hard crashes, user/crash.dmp. Never attach game files.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the Uncharted PC port keep crashing?
Update first: most crashes reported in October were fixed by November (BilalReloaded v0.8.4, SuperMedo v0.3.14). If it still crashes, note the exact message (“device lost”, “execute access to 0”, an ASSERTION line) and the chapter, then match it in the table on this page. Attach the log when you report it.
Uncharted 3 crashes in chapter 8 (The Citadel). How do I fix it?
BilalReloaded found that those copies are missing a game file (ss-area2-breakable-buildings-controller-1.bin), so the crash is not in the port. Use Check game files in BilalReloaded’s launcher to see whether yours is affected; the fix is a complete copy of your game.
What does “device lost” mean?
The graphics driver reset because a GPU job hung or failed. Fixed causes include 1024-thread skinning shaders on GeForce (BilalReloaded 0.8.3, SuperMedo 0.3.10), Uncharted 3’s young Sully shirt shader (BilalReloaded 0.8.4) and the Cartagena square at high frame rates (SuperMedo 0.3). If it still happens, lower the frame rate limit to 60 and report with GPU breadcrumbs on.
Does the Uncharted PC port need AVX2?
No. The instruction lists in both projects name AVX, F16C, BMI1, MOVBE and LZCNT, the extensions of the PS4’s own processor, and not AVX2. Since BilalReloaded 0.8.0 and SuperMedo 0.3.7 the missing ones are carried out by the port on older CPUs: BilalReloaded runs on Intel 2nd/3rd-gen Core and AMD FX, SuperMedo on 3rd-gen Core (Ivy Bridge) and AMD FX but not Sandy Bridge, which also lacks F16C.
There is no sound. What can I do?
Check the Windows output device first. SuperMedo 0.3.14 makes the game try simpler audio modes before going silent when the device won’t open. Both ports read your speaker layout (stereo, 5.1, 7.1); if surround sounds wrong, set Speakers to Stereo (BilalReloaded: Advanced → Speakers). A movie that freezes while the sound continues is a separate open bug.
A cutscene freezes but the audio keeps playing.
Open in BilalReloaded’s port (#226, #262, #270, #177): attach the hang-*.txt file written next to boot.log. SuperMedo 0.3.12 fixed freezes at the start of some cutscenes (mostly Uncharted 1), so trying the other port is a workaround.
